How to choose a dildo is our topic - you know the thing ... all those questions running riot in your head but you're just too shy to ask! Worry not! Your questions will very probably be answered here!
Dildos are the oldest sex toys known to humans, with the earliest dating back to 5000 BC. Although they are generally used for vaginal penetration, dildos like desire, come in many shapes and sizes.
When choosing a dildo it is important that you consider what you are going to be using it for. Being specific can make all the difference in selecting the right dildo for your own needs and desires.
If you're planning on using a harness, you'll need something with a flanged base to hold it in place. You may also want a little more length than you would otherwise, as some of the dildo's length (a
pprox ½ inch) tends to disappear under the harness-wearer's tummy. For anal play the curve of the bottom can make it harder to reach, so again length is important. Please remember that any dildo used for anal play must have a flanged base to prevent it disappearing! For deep thrusting, total body contact play, an overly long dildo may make it difficult or impossible. For most people, the dildo's width is equally as important as length. As a guide, compare the width of your fingers. One last word on size….. one can lose sight of just how big eight inches really is, and there's no rule anywhere saying that an eight-inch-long dildo has to be two inches thick!!
There are various colours of dildo on the market ranging from flesh tones to two-tone swirls. There are an equal number of shapes from realistic penis shapes to absolutely nothing like any human form! Your choice to a large extent will depend on what you want to use it for and of course, your own personal anatomy. If you have discomfort when you're first being penetrated, you might get a dildo with a narrow, tapering tip, whereas if you like a strong, forceful feeling at the moment of entry, you might look for one with a rounder end. Curves and ridges enhance stimulation, and if you're more sensitive or easily bruised, then look for a basic smooth, straight shaft.
Dildos can be made from several different materials: soft and hard, and yes….which to choose depends on how you are going to use it!!
If, for example, you're going to be using your dildo for hours of rough, wild…you get the picture….sex, you probably want a softer, more resilient material that has some flexibility such as silicone or jelly. Silicone has a reputation as the best dildo material because it's very smooth and non-sticky, it’s solid but has a fair amount of give, and it picks up body heat very quickly. A dildo made of a completely hard material such as glass is probably better for slower, sensual, controlled play. The sensitivity of the orifice in question is a factor here too. Vaginas tend to be more resilient than the anus, and while we wouldn't hesitate to recommend a glass dildo for vaginal play, we would advise using a softer material for the anus unless you're experienced with anal play and well acquainted with your needs and limitations. You should also consider what kind of lube you like to use; silicone-based lubes can ruin silicone, so always use a water-based lube when using silicone toys.
Final note……this is your toy! Don’t be too concerned about what anyone else will think if you buy a particular colour, shape, or size. It’s your toy and your pleasure — choose what you like!
