Home > Aphrodisiacs: Cooking for Pleasure

Lost the sparkle in your love life? With an every-little-bit-counts philosophy firmly in mind we’ve done a little bit of digging for you and have found a few tasty (or not!) treats that reportedly possess aphrodisiac properties. The next time it’s your turn to cook make sure you delve the Delia books for recipes that include the following ingredients – you never know you may just be creating the culinary love drug that not only lights the sparklers of your love life, but the fireworks too!

In alphabetical order then:

Almond

The mere scent of almonds is supposed to arouse passion in a woman! Rumour has it that that is why many creams and soaps include a scent of almond!

Artichoke

According to French legend the woman who eats artichoke is a loose woman indeed! Hmmm.

Asparagus

The aphrodisiac properties of asparagus has been the stuff of myth and legend since the days of the famous 17th century herbalist Culpeper. In his Complete Herbal text Culpeper prescribed asparagus “to stir up bodily lust”. An old French tradition apparently saw bride-grooms eat 3 courses of asparagus the night before their wedding. Since we can’t find any particular myth about asparagus stirring up women’s bodily lusts – the phallic shape of asparagus perhaps signposting exactly what it’s supposed to be good for – we included it only out of politeness and deference to our bisexual readers!

Avocado

Now here’s one that invokes a more womanly shape – although its legendary status as an aphrodisiac is sadly due more to its resemblance to a testicle than anything else. Did you know that the Aztecs named the avocado tree Ahuacuatlo? And what exactly does that mean? Why the ‘tree of testicles’ of course! Obvious isn’t it? The very same Aztecs kept their women safely indoors during the avocado harvest lest the immense powerful sexual force of the avocado stirred up their men to uncontrollable rampages.

Banana

Another phallic shape, although there seems to be some scientific support for the banana actually being an aphrodisiac and not just the stuff of legend. Bananas are rich in potassium and vitamin B that help in the production of sex hormones. Apparently according to Islamic myth it was banana leaves and not fig leaves that Adam and Eve covered their bits with!

Caviar

Consumed with vodka caviar is thought to stimulate the production of testosterone – save your money, buy a pack of almonds instead!

Chili Peppers

Anything that warms you up, warms you up (if you know what I mean!) Cayenne pepper also has a similar effect.

Chocolate

I know you came straight to the Cs to double check that it was here! Of course it is! Chocolate works on all levels; the caffeine and sugar contained in chocolate gives an instant boost, our central nervous system gets stimulated just enough to lift our mood, and we’re sedated enoChocolate covered strawberryugh to feel relaxed and to lose our inhibitions all at the same time – perfect for some wild womanly wanton-ness! Even the smell of chocolate turns us on and – best of all – in moderation it’s actually good for us! Thank god for science!!

Clove

Did you know that 2 or 3 drops of clove essence in some honey taken once a day, is thought to be sexually beneficial? No, nor us.

Coffee

Because of the caffeine contained in coffee, this makes the list purely for helping us stay awake a little bit longer than usual to enjoy the aphrodisiac properties of everything else!

Coriander

Coriander is said to invoke a feeling of euphoria in women!

Fennel

Increases your sex drive!

Figs

Break open a fig and eat it in front of your girlfriend – see if she finds it erotic. They’re supposed to have a look of … ahem … female sexual organs!

Garlic

Both you and your girlfriend both need to like garlic to avail yourselves of the stimulation to your sexual desire that garlic provides. The smell of it on one partner alone has a habit of turning the other one off!

Ginger

Another one for warming you up! Ginger is the equivalent of viagra in food terms!

Grapes

Forget the vitamins, sensuously feed grapes to your girlfriend for foreplay! Finger foods work if fed correctly i.e. using your girlfriend’s mouth as target practice and grapes as missiles does not lend itself well to increased sensuality!

Honey

Source of the term honeymoon – newlyweds through the ages have drank mead, a honey-based drink to increase the level of ‘sweetness’ in their marriage. Who needs a certificate to increase sweetness in a relationship? Feed honey to your honey for enhanced sexual health.

Liquorice

Women are thought to find liquorice particularly stimulating! Although liquorice teeth may have an opposite effect than the one desired!

Lobster

Eating lobster with your loved one is supposed to be a turn on. The whole finger food thing again. It’s messy!

Oregano

The herb of choice when used on other aphrodisiacs!

Oysters

Just looking at an oyster puts you in mind of certain things! Certain womanly things! Or so I’ve heard. The nearest an oyster ever got to being an aphrodisiac for me was reading Tipping the Velvet!

Pine Nuts

Thought to increase the libido.

Raspberrys/Strawberries

Have you ever heard the term ‘fruit nipple’? Well now you have! Look at a raspberry or strawberry and think fruit nipple, I swear you’ll never look at them the same way again! Great for foreplay especially dipped in chocolate – oh and the champagne never hurts either!

Tomato

The ‘apples of love’ with their rich red colour and voluptuous good looks – there is absolutely no evidence to support their claim as an aphrodisiac!

So there you have it a (not exhaustive) list of ingredients that even the most inexperienced cook can incorporate into a love-inducing feast. Failing all that, of course, a cup of coffee and box of Thornton’s should do the trick! Enjoy!!
