Women in work: the evidence seems compelling that women are generally ‘second class citizens’ in the workplace. Throw in our sexuality and it could go either way – no wonder so many of us prefer to stay in the work closet.
Studies carried out in the 90s by Stonewall and others point to a UK workforce riddled with discrimination. In 1993, two thirds of a 2000 strong survey carried out by Stonewall admitted to concealing their sexuality from the people they worked with, and 48% said they had been harassed because of their sexuality.
These figures may well be improving since the implementation of legislation in the form of the Employment Equality (Sexual Orientation) Regulations 2003 which now makes it illegal to discriminate against people because of their sexual orientation.
Cases are now beginning to filter their way into the employment tribunal system but it remains apparent that there are still many issues surrounding the employment and management of gay workers. We also suspect, although we can’t irrefutably prove it, that there is also a growing number of Sapphic business owners who are also facing similar issues to employees.
So, with that in mind and knowing that there are a fair few Sapphic workers out there, either running a business of their own or working for others, we thought a little bit of free advice might be appreciated.
So, whether you are a gay business owner, employer or employee if you want some free professional advice on work-place issues (gay-related or otherwise), write to workhelp@sapphiccentral.com .
